The Avodai are a small people, but we have a storied past. Our tradition teaches that we were exiled long ago from our island homeland of Freka in the Verasol Sea. Stories describe Freka as a golden garden, eternally basking in the Light’s favor and overflowing with fruit and nuts. People barely had to farm to meet their needs, and the surplus enabled most to attend to the Soul and the Mind.
But then our ancestors fell from the Way, and their hearts darkened with pride and greed. We turned away the stranger and the poor from our tables. We stripped more than we needed from the land and then fought over the scraps. The Light moved on from us, and we did not notice until the gloomy clouds withered the plants and the rains never stopped. For more than 2000 years, Freka has rested beneath the sea.
The Light exiled us from our home through a great flood in hopes of purifying our souls, and we escaped with nothing more than the remnants of Light in our hearts. Humbled, we scattered across the nations, surviving by leaning on one another and on the Way. We seek to rekindle the Light in our new homelands, bringing Freka’s lost bounty to all. Whether or not Freka was real, Avodai understand this story as a lesson on how to live and treat others.
Unfortunately, we have always been misunderstood by our neighbors. Our neighbors often expel us wherever we have grown roots. It is a hard burden to continue trusting when we are not trusted, and to care for those who do not have your best interest at heart, but it is the only way to someday repair the world.
