Society of Rafa primarily operates with symmetrical information between players and Storyteller. The only resources the players may want to avoid are the starter scenarios to preserve the mystery for gameplay. Otherwise, everyone has equal access to the Handbook, Book of Spirits, and Medical Records.
While you don’t need everything below, you may want to consider these materials when creating and running a Society of Rafa scenario:
Scenario Guide #
You can use one of our starter scenarios or create your own. You should include all the key information here that you need to run the scenario so you do not need to switch between documents.
Medical Records #
The provided medical records are a great tool for creating NPCs for your own scenarios.
For the players, have a separate document with any medical records relevant to the scenario, including the patient, their family, and any NPCs you might want to use. You can give this document to your players at the beginning of play, or remind them it exists.
For yourself, include any key NPC details on your cheat sheet.
Blank Medical Records #
You can use the blank medical record pdf to create your own villagers or modify existing ones into a common format.
Book of Spirits #
Like the medical records, you can use the Book of Spirits to help fashion scenarios.
Keep the Book of Spirits handy as a reference for yourself and your players. Again, make sure to include any key details about scenario-related Spirits on your run guide for your own ease of use.
If your players are game at the end of the session, invite them to add any important characteristics into the Book of Spirits.
Dice #
Storytellers need one four-sided die (1D4) and players need a pool of three ten-sided dice (3D10). Every player could bring their own, but three dice should be sufficient for any number of players. Also, digital dice randomizers are great for online play.
Rafa Skill Cheat Sheet #
On the last page of the Character Sheet you will find the Rafa Skill Cheat Sheet and Life Energy Counter, which you can use to track patients’ life energy.
Digital Whiteboard #
For online play, a digital whiteboard is quite handy. You can use a generic one or one built specifically for TTRPGs. For a new Circle, include your agenda, introduction questions, and the first page of the character sheet.
For all sessions thereafter, include links for materials like Medical Records, the skills cheat sheet for tracking patient health, and any images you want to use as reference during play. The more artistic and visual you make it, the more it should stoke your players’ imaginations!
Name Tags #
For in-person play, it is really helpful for players to write down their characters’ first name and specialty. Digitally, you can suggest players change their username in the video call or write onto your digital whiteboard.
