Midnight moon contains some of the longest nights of the year culminating in the winter solstice. It is a damp, cool, and rainy time.
Kindling Day | 21st | Local Festival #
Kindling Day is a celebration of Kahal’s founding and the day when the eternal flame was Za’halemi Avodai brought us a spark from the Eternal Flame. The flame has been passed from community to community all the way back to Freka. Kindling Day is celebrated on the winter solstice, the actual historical day was about a week earlier. The entire town is filled with lanterns, lit from the eternal flame. There is a huge communal meal. The Rebas give talks, but the focus of the day is on singing, feasting, and the lantern lighting ceremony. Artichokes, fritters drizzled in honey and orange blossom water, and sweet cheese pies are fried in freshly pressed olive oil in celebration of the oil that keeps the fire burning. Olive oil from the recent olive harvest is also ceremonially added to the eternal flame.
