In Avodai society, people’s formal names contain both their first name and their parents’ first names.
<First Name> bet <Birthing Parent> v’ <Parent 2>
i.e. <First Name> child of <Birthing Parent> and <Parent 2>
For example, Galit’s mother is Ruth and her father is Mica.
Therefore, Galit’s full name is Galit bet Ruth v’ Mica.
Most people in Kahal have unique first names, since it is a taboo to name a child after the living so as to not steal their soul.
Therefore, people go by their first name in most informal situations, while they may embellish upon first meetings or other formal occasions.
Those with honorary titles such as Rafa and Reba will most often be addressed by their title and first name.
You may choose whichever name you like. See the list of common Avodai names for inspiration.
Detailed Naming Conventions #
Adopted children #
<First Name> bet <Birthing Parent> v’ <Parent> v’ <Adoptive Parent> v’ <Adoptive Parent>
For example, Shai adopted their cousin Bezi after her parents died.
Bezi’s name is Bezi bet Orly v’ Simon v’ Shai.
Adopted children add their adopted parents’ names after their birth parents:
If their birth parents are unknown, they just use their adoptive parents names, but this would be a rare occurrence as most adoption occurs within families and the community. Like any person, an adopted child can remove any of their parents’ names from their name in rebuke.
Couples who require another’s aid to have a child #
Any person who helps a couple have a child has given the greatest of gifts. By tradition, the family always honors such a person. The parents and child give them gifts each year on the child’s birthday. They act as a doting aunt or uncle and will care for the child in case of their parents’ deaths. Therefore, the child will bear all three parents in their full name.
When a member of the couple carries the child, the child’s name will be formatted:
<First name> bet <Birthing Parent> v’ <Parent> v’ <Donor>
For example, Mya has two mothers, Nava and Gavi. Her Uncle Hanan, Gavi’s brother, helped Nava conceive Mya.
Mya’s name is Mya bet Nava v’ Gavi v’ Hanan.
If the couple requires another to carry their child, the child’s name will be formatted:
<First Name> bet <Surrogate> v’ <Biological Parent> v’ <Parent>
For example, Niv’s mother is Ofra and his father is Vidal. Ofra cannot bear children. Zila carried Niv for the couple.
Therefore Niv’s name is Niv bet Zila v’ Ofra v’ Vidal.
Avodai converts #
Converts take the parental name of “Or” meaning Light.
<First Name> bet Or
For example, Camilla was born into a Lumdai family as Camilla Blanci. She married Asaf and later converted to Avodai.
After conversion she changed her name to Camilla bet Or.
If a convert gets adopted into an Avodai family, they may either add their adoptive parents’ names after Or or drop Or from their name entirely.
