Shamir worms can eat through any material using their penetrating gaze. In Kenes, builders used the shamir worms to build the House of Light, the most sacred of Avodai sanctuaries where the eternal flame was housed.
The shamir worms carved the diamond lamp for the Eternal Flame. It is said that the lamp reflected the sacred light 1000-fold. It is the only known diamond to have intricate carvings of interlocking lemniscates, representing the infinity of the Light and creation. Humans can never hope to understand all of the depths of creation, but we must always work to deepen our understanding for the glory of the Light.
Because of their service to the Light, the shamir worms are sacred. Hoopoes swore an oath to protect them.
Shamir worms are incredibly rare and greatly sought after by craftfolks. I have never personally seen one. I do know from my own teachers that they must be stored in a leaden bowl full of barley bran, so they do not eat everything in their vicinity.

Make sure to wash your hands after using a leaden bowl as lead does great harm to the human mind. As I have not heard of a sighting of a shamir worm in the last 300 years, I doubt you will have the need. -Rosh Rafa Malchi
