Zabbah (weekly)

Zabbah is the weekly day of rest. It starts and ends at sundown. At sundown, the women of the town enter the House of Prayer and light candles from the Eternal Flame. They bring these candles into their homes where they have a Zabbah meal. Families invite each other over for Zabbah dinner and lunch.

Each Zabbah meal is flanked by the Zabbah Bread, a braided honey loaf. There are often seasonal pies, chickpea and greens stew dolloped with yogurt, couscous or crispy rice, and a variety of salads and dips.

Zabbah day is centered around prayer and study at the House of Prayer and resting after a busy week. Stores, workshops, and other forms of commercialism are closed for the entire day, although the precept that life matters above all exempt Rafa handling medical emergencies.
